MAYLANDS HISTORICAL AND PENINSULA ASSOCIATION

VH-UOM was a Vickers Viastra II imported from the UK by West Australian Airways. These aircraft replaced the Hercules on the Perth to Adelaide service, but were plagued with engine problems resulting in many forced landings.

  • MHS/FC 248. B&W photograph. January 1933. The Viastra VH-UOM, the DH50A VH-UEM and the DH 66 Hercules VH-UJP gathered together at Forrest after the search and rescue of Whelan and Stuckey from the Great Victoria Desert.

  • FC 261. B&W photograph. 1933. Belmont, WA. The crashed Viastra VH-UOM as it appeared before disassembly for transport away from the crash site. This image also appears on page 52 of Frank Colquhoun’s 2001 book Cockpit and Spanner.
    Alternative caption for MHS/FC 261 – 1933. Viastra VH-UOM crashed at Redcliffe following engine failure. The aircraft was too badly damaged to repair and was scrapped.
  • FC 262. B&W photograph. 1933. Belmont in WA. The front section of the crashed Viastra VH-UOM being loaded aboard a truck for transport away from the crash site. This image also appears on page 53 of Frank Colquhoun’s 2001 book Cockpit and Spanner.
