In 1928, Australian aviator Bert Hinkler flew Avro 581 Avian G-EBOV on the first solo flight between England and Australia. Having left London/Croydon on 7 February, he arrived in Darwin on 22 February, smashing the old record time of 28 days for a flight between England and Australia. He flew on to his home town of Bundaberg in Queensland arriving on 27 February. Hinkler and G-EBOV then began a tour that included Australia’s capital cities and a number of regional centres.
That tour included flying G-EBOV from Melbourne to Perth. His wife, who had travelled to Fremantle on a mail boat, flew back to Queensland with her husband. Frank Colquhoun’s photographs show Bert Hinkler’s Avro Avian at Maylands, where WA Airways engineers removed the long-range fuel tank from the front cockpit so his wife could fly with him.
Hinkler gifted G-EBOV to the Queensland Government and it is now part of the Queensland Museum & Science Centre’s collection.
Our Frank Colquhoun Collection includes:
MHS/FC 168. 1928. The Avro Avian flown from England to Australia in record time by Bert Hinkler. Later, Hinkler flew it to Perth where WA Airways removed the long-range tanks from the front cockpit so he could pick up his wife, who had arrived in Fremantle on a mail boat and fly her back to their home state of Queensland.
After a record-breaking flight from England to Australia, Bert Hinkler flew his Avro Avian to Maylands where engineers removed the long-range fuel tank from the front cockpit so his wife could fly back to Queensland with him.
