David Smith served with the Y3A Australian Medium Trench Mortar Battery of the Australian Imperial Force in WWI. His service number was 863 and he held the rank of Gunner.
He was killed in action in Belgium on 21 May 1917 aged 19 and is buried in Strand Military Cemetery, Ploegsteert, Wallonie, Belgium.
His name is located at panel 20 in the Commemorative Area at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.
