Charles Kingsford Smith ‘Smithy’ is one of Australia’s most famous aviators.

Our Frank Colquhoun Collection includes:

  • MHS/FC 181 – 1928 photograph of the visit of Charles Kingsford Smith and his ‘Southern Cross’ to Maylands Airfield (This image also appears on page 13 of Frank Colquhoun’s 2001 book Cockpit and Spanner)
  • MHS/FC 360 – a 1931 photograph of the marsh at the Wyndham, WA. showing Charles Kingsford Smith (atop a  wing) assisting in refuelling ‘ his Avro Avian VH-UQG ‘Southern Cross Minor from drum fuel prior to taking off on an unsuccessful attempt on the Australia-UK record (This image also appears on page 36 of Frank Colquhoun’s 2001 book Cockpit and Spanner)
