Nurse Weaver‘s private maternity hospital Carn Brea was located at 19 Kirkham Hill Terrace Maylands.
Carn Brae was operating in 1917 and still operating into the late-1930s. Its location in Kirkham Hill Terrace overlooking the Swan River was part of its appeal.
Carn Brae was an important place in early 20th century Maylands. Birth notices in the newspapers show many children were born at Carn Brae. The location of Carn Brae in Kirkham Hill Terrace was so well-known that newspaper articles, advertisements and notices about Carn Brae (see a sample of these in our Carn Brae TROVE list at https://trove.nla.gov.au/list?id=124994) never mentioned its street number. It seemed more important to display the phone number for Carn Brae.
Maylands Historical and Peninsula Association acknowledges the Whadjuk people of the Noongar nation as the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we work, live, and learn. We acknowledge that we tell the stories of Noongar Country and we pay our respects to Elders past and present. This always was, and always will be, Aboriginal land.
